Biographie
The son of a cattle merchant, Thomas Bienvenue and his wife Marie Torsay, François Bienvenue followed public science courses in Paris before establishing his own business as an instrument-maker, and public lecturer gijving demonstrations on his own premises so as to enhance sales. In 1784 in collaboration with the naturalist Léon Launoy he showed a proto-helicopter to the Académie des Sciences where it was favourably received.
In 1786 he married Marie-Thérèse Pitay being described as 'ingénieur en instruments de physique ' in the marriage contract. In 1788 he displayed a method for producing inflammable gas in a lamp of his own devising tothe Académie. During the Revoution period he turned himself into an itinerant public physics demonstrator taking his apparatus to Tours, Bordeaux, Toulouse, to Italy, where he r reconstructed some of Lavoisier's experiments, to Spain, where he supplied instruments to the Royal College at Segovia, to Vienna and tothe Low Countries. In 1821 Bienvenue retired to Tours where he tried to sell his cabinet of apparatus to the town which refused considering it notrequisite for the local college. In November 1826 he formally adopted an orpha ed girl for whom he had cared since 1797. He died in Paris, rue du Vaugirard in his son-in-law' house (1). Only a protractor signed by him is known (2).
