Biographie

Kunig first studied at an unknown university, then at Heidelberg where he matriculated 12 April 1486. After obtaining the degree of MA he was appointed to the church of St Nicolas, Strasburg. In an autograph manuscript compilation on astronomy begun in 1482, Kunig states that on 6 February 1500 he completed the making of an astrolabe (1). Part of this manuscript was later incorporated into the 1512 Strasburg edition by Johann Grüninger of the Margarita philosophica of Gregor Reisch. Ernst Zinner claimed romatically that an unsigned astrolabe dated 1481 preserved in Strasburg is the work of Kunig, and that the turbaned astrologer holding the 1493 sun-dial on Strasburg Cathedral is a portrait of him. Evidence is la cking for both suggestions (2).
