Biographie
A precision instrument-maker who founded his business which combined the making of drawing and surveying instruments with the retailing of inks, paper and colours for artists and architects in 1824(1). Remarking that his boards for plane tables and artists did not have the same stability as his other instruments, Tachet developed a method for protecting wood from the influence of the atmosphere. This 'ouxhygrométrique' method he patented in September 1845, renaming it 'anhygrométrique' in an addition to his patent in 1851 (2). The method was successful, Tachet's boards were adopted as a support for their paintings by artists such as Ingres, Corot, Moreau or Puvis de Chavannes, and retailed widely by artists' suppliers and colourists. The making of precision instruments however continued and Antoine d'Abbadie ordered a decimal protractor from him in 1864/5. D'Abbadie however was not sure of the maker's name when he asked Rudolph Radau to collect it in August 1865 (3).
