in 1786 continued for some months the work abandoned by Mégnié (qv ) at the Observatory on his precipitate departure. In 1789 he was incorporated into the corporation of Ingénieurs du Roi on his first presentation at which time he was developing an improved form of filar micrometer. In the following years he devised an equa ãtorial instrument which could also serve as a meridian or transit instrument, and a repeating circle. For it Haupois received an award of 6000 livres even before the instrument was purchased by the Observatory for 10000 livres. Hautpois was one of the instrument-makers whom Cassini intended to send to England to work with Ramsden. Micrometers of his production were purchased by the Observatory in 1788 and 1791 and instruments known to have been made by him during this decade include a repeating circle and an equatorial instrument. Similar instruments were still on Hautpois' hands in 1806 when Lalande noted that he was Director of the Chaillot steam pump where he lived.1
