A precision instrument-maker who established is business in 1856. He is described as 'ingénieur-électricien' in the membership list of the Société Française de Physique of which he was a founding member and of which, 7 May 1884, he was elected the treasurer & archivist succeeding Gauthier-Villars. A resourceful inventor and investigator in his field, Gaiffe made numerous innovations and was responsible for the introduction into France of 'nickelage galvanique'. He organised the electrification of the gas-lamps in the Chambre de Députés and the Senate, invented an electric arc lamp and, with Clamond, a new form of battery. He showed magneto- and dynamo-electric machines, galvanometers and resistance bridges, electro-medical apparatus, induction coils and magnets at the 1881 International Electricity Exhibition (1).
